Swallow Nursery

(for Mike and Andrea, and their swallows)

They came, swooping over our lawn
spring visitors on a misty dawn.
Needing a barn, or something more,
they came to nest by our front door.

Very soon the brood arrived
and all four of them survived.
Then, disaster, striking hard
tipped them out into the yard.

A swift solution found a nest
in Andrea’s hat, it was the best.
Safely tucked up in a bucket
it proved to be, just the ticket!

The swallow nursery did the trick
all four fledged, it was so quick.
Now flying round the sunny sky
they built another nest close by.

Next spring it is no surprise that
the swallows will want another hat!
