Poem of the Month, November 2016: Ballade van het Slagveld in mijn Slaapkaamer

BALLADE VAN HET SLAGVELD
IN MIJN SLAAPKAMER

O God!
I had a battle with an angel
on my bed.

It was very odd.
She got hold of my grollies
and twisted them hard
like Scotland Yard.

She wouldn’t let go
of my life.
I thought of calling my wife
in the other room
to chase her away with a broom.

My head was in a mess
and filled with gloom.

I begged her to leave me alone
but my begging fell like a stone
into a deep dark lake.

“You have made a mistake,” she said
in the middle of my bed
in her flimsy cotton dress,
“and now you’re going to pay.
No paninis for you today.
STAY AWAY.”

I lost that fearful fight
at the end of a sleepless night,
and collapsed on my back,
the victim of her attack.
That was the end of it all –
