\nthe stiff climb, you
\ncome upon it.
\nThe Beacon.
\nModest by monument
\nstandards, a small
\nhollow pillar of
\nworn old sandstone.<\/p>\n

Graffiti, names
\na century old,
\nadorn the cracked
\nsurface like a
\nfading moss.
\nIs this a warning? No,
\nnot an invading army
\nfrom across the Border.<\/p>\n

But locals, their
\nlove’s initials cut,
\nto mark their slow
\npassage across
\nlife’s pages.
\n‘I was here 1902’.
\nNot a great year, but
\nshe was with him.<\/p>\n

Perhaps, the real enemy
\nthe Beacon watches
\nis Time itself. Slow,
\npatient, dissolving
\nfloods of years, that
\ncarve the stone into
\na myriad shapes
\nand holes.<\/p>\n

And then, come Easter,
\nbattened to its face,
\na huge white cross
\nof wood, looks out
\nacross the town to
\nmark the death of One
\ndefying time, who lives
\nagain in faith.<\/p>\n
