APRIL 2020<\/p>\n

April, bringer of spring
\ncomes over the hills,
\ncountryside awakening
\ndespite human ills.
\nOur pet dove cries
\nhis repetitive notes,
\nas we leave the house
\nin our outdoor coats.<\/p>\n

Under the eaves by
\nthe bathroom window
\nour visiting martins,
\nchattering low,
\nrebuild their nest,
\nafter winter’s fury,
\nfor this year’s brood
\nto continue the story.<\/p>\n

Past the village hall
\nour road snakes by,
\nunder the railway bridge
\nframing blue sky.
\nOld oak trees display
\nnew leaves, shining bright,
\nfor rooks, who chorus
\ntheir spring delight.<\/p>\n

The fill the air
\nwith noise aclaim,
\nabove them the buzzard
\nplays a waiting game.
\nIn a roadside bank
\nfresh bluebells appear,
\ntheir fragrant scent
\nhanging in the air.<\/p>\n

We pass ‘hidden corner’
\nand down a farm lane,
\nwith new born lambs
\ncrying as in pain.
\nThe ewes in return
\ngrunt their reply,
\nsuckling both offspring
\nas we walk on by.<\/p>\n

Into the Ghyll now
\nfull of bright sun,
\nwe follow Trout Beck
\nalong its slow run;
\nthe trees curving over
\nsheltering sheep,
\nthe river beside us
\nsings soft and deep.<\/p>\n

Crossing an old stile
\nand into the field
\nrabbits run off,
\ntheir burrows revealed.
\nNow, deep in the Ghyll
\nsurrounded by wood,
\nis a closed path sign
\n‘destroyed by a flood’.<\/p>\n

So, it’s time to return
\nto a chaffinch’s song
\njoined by a wren
\nas we saunter along.
\nA friendly sheep starts
\nto follow our path,
\nsure we have food, it
\njust makes us laugh!<\/p>\n

Along peaceful meadows
\npast the old farm,
\nour walk lifts our spirits
\nand quietens alarm.
\nAs with us, we know,
\nwalks a silent threat
\ntaking thousands of lives
\nand not finished yet.<\/p>\n

Our April walk brings
\nmemories to treasure,
\nof friends we know
\nwho shared our pleasure.<\/p>\n
