(‘Dawn’ by Thomas Ades, premiered at the BBC Proms)
Enter now the rising air, the
sounds of nature waking.
A myriad voices flowing round
me as the dawn is breaking.
Open now my inner mind
to elemental beauty,
a fresh new day is born,
growing resolutely.
I feel the echoing basses
underneath my feet,
dark, mysterious notes
that endlessly repeat.
Suddenly, a squeal of joy, as
sunlight floods the earth, it’s
the orchestra of life, playing
for all its worth.
