Disconnected

It’s all about speed, and instant connection
a push-button age that lacks introspection.
They must have it now, tomorrow’s too late,
just a click on a mouse, with no need to wait.

With desktop, and laptop, tablet and phone
the world is our oyster, we are never alone.
Wall to wall news, entertainment galore
always in touch, who could ask for more?

But, the older you are the harder it gets
to keep up the pace, one so quickly forgets.
And forced to stay in, far more than expected,
fearing the virus, we’ve become disconnected.

It’s solitary confinement for months at a time,
with all your friends absent, it’s really a crime.
Try as we may, it just doesn’t feel pleasant
to talk via Zoom, all blurry and hesitant.

The telephone is there, if you know the number,
or remember the name, now that is a wonder.
For our generation, face to face is the best –
which means next year. If we’re free of the pest.
